Professional Career Story:
Growing up, she was always fond of acting but her father was against her taking up this profession since he considered it too risky for her to do. He made her start her formal education early to pursue what she loved doing, which was business. Shilpa’s first experience in films was through teleserial. The teleserial was called Sarfarosh: The Reality, aired in 1999, in which she played the lead role of a lady pilot. She played the lead character in two more teleserials, The Rapture and CID-Crime Investigating Cell.
After the release of Sarfarosh, Shilpa was noticed and soon she was approached for a film. The film in question was called Devi that also starred Tabu, Ranjeet, and Rahul Bose. However, after she had been in the film for a few days, Shilpa complained of a mysterious ailment that put her out of the project. Since she did not disclose this ailment to her producers and directors, she was replaced by Rakhi Sawant in the film.
While she was still in the hospital, another film was being shot. A film based on a play called Abeed Bani. The film was titled Kal Ho Naa Ho. While the other actresses were on their way to do the shoot of the film, they met with an accident and one of them, Sussanne Khan, even died. She was hit by a car, while in the middle of the street on her way to the film shoot. This resulted in a fracture to her spine that had to be operated on and she was hospitalized for nine months. Sussanne Khan and Shilpa were co-stars in the film but Sussanne was replaced by Deepika Padukone and Shilpa Shetty became the lead actress.

After a year of about with this mysterious illness, she continued to shoot for two films and then went to Switzerland for a vacation. She came back to India after a short while, and then took a few months off to rest. She was about to give the shoot of the film, Apne alongside Sunny Deol and Boby Deol, a miss when her leg suddenly gave up. During that time, she was depressed because of the loss of Sussanne Khan.
She received the honorary citizenship of Saanichton in Canada from the mayor of that city. The film was released in September 2004. She also appeared in Dus Kahaniyaan with Hrithik Roshan, Kajol, and Kareena Kapoor. Shilpa later revealed that Kajol had recommended her to Hrithik Roshan for their first film together.
With the success of Apne, she was then featured in the spin-off sequel called Dus Kahaniyaan where she played opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh. Their love story was based on a real-life event. In 2005, Shilpa started her own company Sheena Bora Enterprises and acted in the television show Tu Hai Mera Sunday on Star Plus. The show was popular and Shilpa’s performance was noticed and appreciated by the audiences.
